Young entrepreneur opens ice cream and coffee shop on Boblo Island

Nineteen-year-old Matt Boschin has opened “Captain Bob's Island Ice Cream and Coffee Cabin” on Boblo Island. The young entrepreneur will be running it near the Boblo Beach House restaurant through the summer.

Nineteen-year-old Matt Couloufis has opened “Captain Bob’s Island Ice Cream and Coffee Cabin” on Boblo Island. The young entrepreneur will be running it near the Boblo Beach House restaurant through the summer.

Another young entrepreneur has set up shop on Boblo Island as 19-year-old Matt Couloufis has opened “Captain Bob’s Island Ice Cream and Coffee Cabin.”

The summer business opened last Saturday across from the Boblo Beach House restaurant on the island with Couloufis offering 12 different flavours of ice cream, coffee and espresso. Boschin received a Summer Company program grant through the Windsor-Essex County Small Business Centre so he could fill what he says is an increasing demand on the island.

“It’s kind of a mentorship opportunity too,” he said of the Summer Company grant. “It’s a great leadership experience to learn how to establish a business.”

Couloufis said traffic to Boblo Island has increased with more residents and visitors and he said people were looking for a place on the island to grab a coffee or an ice cream. Being across from the restaurant allows him to capture diners as they exit after dinner and want to walk around the island.

“I was presented an opportunity to take advantage of a niche market here,” he said. “I’m very excited.”

Couloufis said he has “personal ties” to Boblo Island, including having family live there, adding that people were asking when he was going to be open. He said he enjoys business and management, adding he aims to be a business lawyer when he finishes school.

The name is a play on the name of the island and the fact it is accessible by boat. Couloufis said he wanted to keep that theme.

Captain Bob’s Island Ice Cream and Coffee Cabin is open Fridays 12-9 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Couloufis plans to expand his hours in July and run the shop through September.

“It’s another attraction to bring people to the island,” he said.

Couloufis joins 16-year-old Aleks Dobrich as a young entrepreneur on the island, the latter recently opening a paddleboard business entitled South Beach Watersports.
