For those who enjoy nature paintings as well as work that is more abstract, the newest exhibit at the Mudpuppy Gallery could be right up their alley.

Amherstburg resident Shirley Tilden is presenting her first exhibit since moving to town four years ago and her “Nature’s Muse” show runs at the Dalhousie St.-based gallery through May 25.

Local artist Shirley Tilden is the featured artist this month at The Mudpuppy Gallery. Her exhibit - “Nature's Muse” - runs through May 25. A reception was held for her last Sunday afternoon.

There are roughly 35 works in her current exhibit, which is being shown alongside work done by the members of the local artist co-operative.

“I paint from my subconscious,” said Tilden. “I’ve been painting since the early 1990’s. Most of my paintings are abstract.”

Tilden said she loves painting colours and shapes and doesn’t necessarily know what the final product will be once she starts one of her works.

“When I start a painting, I choose my colours and go for it,” said Tilden. “I let the universe guide me to the next steps.”

The show came about as a result of a friend of Tilden’s. Tilden explained she originally went to the Mudpuppy Gallery a few years ago to drop off a painting for her friend to be entered into one of the exhibits. After chatting with people at the gallery, Tilden was advised she could drop off one of her own paintings and she did. It sold. The idea for a show came after that.

“That encouraged me to get paintings together and book a show,” she said.

Tilden added she was a hypnotherapist while living in Oakville and that she helped people quit smoking. She believes youth should be encouraged not to start and she has written “Because I Love You,” a book designed at educating youth on the dangers of smoking. That book is also for sale during her show, with the cost being $10 per copy.
