The fight against prostate cancer returns to the water this Sunday.

The third annual Watercraft Ride for Dad is scheduled for July 28 with the ride being based out of Ranta Marina. Proceeds from the ride will go to the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation.

Organizer Steve Kidd said the route is a bit smaller this year, as it has gone from 40 km last year to 27 km this year. The midway point will be in Amherst Pointe as Kidd said private beach owners were generous enough to offer their land for the event.

Kidd said Powerboat TV will be on hand to document this year’s ride for a televised special with an airdate to be announced.

“They’re filming an episode during the ride this year,” said Kidd.

The Watercraft Ride for Dad raised $2,000 in Amherstburg in its inaugural year of 2011 and raised $10,000 last year.

“We’re hoping to exceed that this year,” said Kidd. “Wherever we end up, we’ll be happy with it.”

The ride is geared towards jet-skis and jet boats but Kidd noted a “limited amount of traditional boats” will be allowed in this year as well.

“This is the first time we’re letting in some of the bigger guys to come in and play,” he said.

Kidd added that pre-registration is “strongly encouraged” and that can be done at www.ridefordad.ca. Those who register the day of the event can do so from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon, followed by a safety briefing and then the ride itself. The $30 registration fee also covers the meal that occurs at the ride’s conclusion.

“Ranta Grill is putting on a nice dinner for everyone when we get back,” said Kidd.
