Walker Homesites edges Bantam Cards 10-9

The Amherstburg Bantam Cardinals are still looking for their first home win of the season after dropping a heartbreaker to Walker Homesites 10-9 Sunday evening.

In a game that last just short of three hours, the two teams combined for 16 runs in the first three inning of the game.

The Bantam Cards used their speed on the base paths, stealing 10 bases throughout the game.

Amherstburg lead 7-3 after two inning with Derek Matte and Eric Parker leading the charge with a pair of singles that drove in two runs each.

Walker Homesites answered with an explosive inning of their own, score five runs in the top of the third for a 9-7 lead.

Amherstburg would cut into the lead in the fourth when Matte collected his third RBI of the game when he grounded into a fielder’s choice that score a run.

Walker Homesites would score to make it 10-8 late in the game.

With Amherstburg trailing 10-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Bantam Cardinals had fans on the edge of the seat by Chris Wismer driving in a run with an RBI single.

Wismer missed tying the game as Wismer was tagged out at home plate and a base runner was thrown out at third base to end the game.

‘I’m proud of the ay they play,” said manager Chris Meloche.  “We need to learn to control ourselves when the pressure is on.”

Meloche said he is happy how the team is progressing. He mentioned that the Bantams are starting to see the ball better at the plate as the defensive continues to be a work in progress.

Meloche also mentioned that Walker Homesites are classified as an AAA team opposed to Amherstburg’s C class.

“We will compete will team like this,” said Meloche.

Derek Matte who went one-for-three with three RBI’s said he was pleased with the team performance at the plate and noted that several players “stepped up” at key moments during the game. He mentioned the Bantams need to do a better job keeping their emotions in check.

“We need to control anger and emotions at the plate. We got a little out of control,” said Matte. “Once we get a hold of ourselves we will do better.”

The Bantam Cardinals fall to 0-3 on the season.
