The Verdi Club’s “Gala Evening of Music” is fast approaching and organizers are anticipating a wonderful evening.

The gala is scheduled for Oct. 11 and will see a five-course gourmet dinner served followed by a performance of “La traviata” by the Friends of the Opera of Michigan. The event is to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the club’s namesake, legendary operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi and will also be a fundraiser for Amherstburg Community Services.

“The evening will be a celebration of music,” said Remo Mancini, one of three co-chairs that heads up a 29-person organizing committee. “It’s been turned into a gala evening of music. It’s going to be quite an eventful night at the Giuseppe Verdi Club in Amherstburg.”

Not only is the gala designed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Verdi, it is also a chance to for the local Italian community to reflect upon its roots in Amherstburg.

“It’s an opportunity for the membership of the Giuseppe Verdi Club to remember the establishment of the club in 1958, to remember the namesake Giuseppe Verdi and why the social club was named for Giuseppe Verdi,” said Mancini. “It was to bring Italian heritage and culture to Canada and share it with the entire community.”

Mancini emphasized it is a team effort to put the gala on and he is one of 29 people helping to organize it. The two other co-chairs are Roseann Danese and Connie Simone, he stated, and noted “dozens of other volunteers are participating in other ways as well.

“They deserve all the credit.”

Mancini said he has enjoyed being a part of helping to present this gala.

“It’s been a wonderful and pleasant experience to bring everyone together,” said Mancini.

The Verdi Club will also be donating five per cent of the value of every ticket sold to Amherstburg Community Services. With a goal of at least 300 ticket sales, that would mean at least a $1,500 donation to ACS. Mancini said it shows the Verdi Club is proud to give back to the Amherstburg community.

A sponsor wall is also being created, with three levels of sponsorship (gold, silver, bronze) ranging from $1,000, $500 to $250. The work of the sponsorship committee has lead to 21 sponsorships being sold, said Mancini.

“To me, it is a tremendous success,” he said.

The commemorative book being created has over 50 pages, he said, and that is an “outstanding” success as well, he stated.

Pelee Island Winery will produce a special wine for that evening and people will also be allowed to purchase it, said Mancini. He added Pelee Island Winery has been a good supporter of the Verdi Club through the years.

“We appreciate the help,” said Mancini.

Tickets, which are $100, are still available and can be purchased by contacting the Verdi Club at 519-736-4382.
