UCCUC to host Spitfires’s Blue & White game

By Joel Charron

To thank Amherstburg for their support of their franchise, the Windsor Spitfires will be playing their annual Blue & White game at the United Communities Credit Union Complex on Sept. 2.

The Blue & White game is the final exhibition game before the team is chosen for the 2011-2012 OHL season.

“Amherstburg is a great supporter of our organization,” said Peter Dobrich, Windsor Spitfires Governor. “I scan the area codes to see where we are drawing the fans from and we have quite the support group from Amherstburg.”

By hosting the Blue & White game in Amherstburg, Dobrich said this is the Windsor Spitfires’ way of saying “thank you.”

Along with giving something back to the community, the Blue & White game will also act as a fundraiser for Amherstburg Minor Hockey.

“It’s a great way to promote hockey in Amherstburg,” explain Dobrich.

Amherstburg Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) president Marc Renaud having the Blue and White game in Amherstburg is a good way to get kids excited for the upcoming hockey season.

“We though it would be something unique for Amherstburg,” said Renaud.

The AMHA president also mentioned this is the first time an OHL franchise has played a game in Amherstburg.

“This is a great opportunity for kids who can’t make it out to Windsor to come and watch great hockey from a high caliber team,” explained Renaud.

Another selling point was the United Communities Credit Union Complex. Dobrich, who recently purchased a house on Bob-lo Island, called the United Communities Credit Union Complex a “fabulous arena.”

“This is unreal for a community arena,” he said.

He also mentioned when officials from Hockey Canada came to view the area, they were “blown away” at the level of facilities that the surrounding area have at their disposal.

“They could not believe what great facilities this area has within a 30 minute drive,” Dobrich said.

Tickets for the Blue & White game will be sold at the United Communities Credit Union Complex. Tickets will be $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Players will warm-up at 5:30 p.m. and the puck will drop at 6 p.m.

After the game the players will be available for a meet and greet session.

“We are really excited, to have the Windsor Spitfires here,” said Wilma Murray, Fundraising Director of Amherstburg Minor Hockey. “I think it will encourage kids to get involved in hockey.”

Murray added that this could possibly open the door to future events with the back-to-back Memorial Cup champions.

“We are hoping to build a nice partnership with the community and the Windsor Spitfires,” Murray said.
