Town scores a ‘home run’

The municipality has scored a “grand slam” for its participation in helping to capture the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association’s 2013 National Championships.

Dean Collver the town’s director of recreation and culture informed council at the Nov 13 meeting, that the United Communities Credit Union Complex will be the main diamond for the 2013 event scheduled for October.

Frank Jeney, team manager of Lancers Baseball, along with Collver and Rick Daly, manager of development were on-hand at the meeting to speak about the high profile event.

Jeney, whose extensive background in baseball resulted in his induction into the Wayne State University Hall of Fame in Feb. 2011, submitted the successful bid to host the event in Amherstburg to the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association.

“These are currently the only national championships for collegiate, slash university baseball in Canada,” said Jeney.   “Although the league is called the Canadian Inter Collegiate League it is made up of over thirteen universities and four colleges.”

“The reason our bid held out was because of the facilities…our president came down to a handle some business and his jaw dropped when he walked on the field,” Jeney explained.

“With this announcement the premiere diamond at the Communities Credit Union Complex, as well as the facility as a whole is being recognized as the state-of-the-art event opportunity that it was designed to be,” said Collver.

“My hat’s off to all three of you,” said councilor John Sutton. “This was a vision that we had when the complex was just in its formation stage, to have a premiere baseball field that would attract these types of events and truly be world class.”

During the 2012 CIBA season, the University of Windsor Lancer baseball team and the town entered into a partnership that saw the team use the Premier Diamond for its home games.

This relationship will continue in the 2013 season as well.

For the 2013 season the Communities Credit Union Complex will remain the home for the Lancers baseball team,” said Daly.

The championships will take place from Oct. 17 to 20, 2013, and will consist of six teams, including the three conference champions –Atlantic Champion, Northern Champion, Ontario Champion, OUA Champion, host and CIBA wildcard.

The St. Clair College Saints are the 2012 champions who defeated Cape Breton at the University of Ottawa.
