Ribfest returned over the weekend and thousands of people from Amherstburg were more than happy to stuff their faces with what they had to offer.

“I think the fifth time has been the charm,” said Rotary Club of Amherstburg president Lena Lazanja. “The weather was perfect. People have heard it’s a great event.”

Lazanja said word spread all over social media but didn’t start there, as she noted she has been fielding questions about Ribfest since February. As of Monday morning, the estimated crowd was 13,500 people for the weekend, which Lazanja said is a new record.

“It’s been years since I’ve seen a Friday like that,” she said. “After a long, hard winter, we’re finally being rewarded.”

Pig Kahuna was a new addition to the lineup of ribbers this year, joining returnees Ribs Royale, The Chop Shop and Crabby’s BBQ Shack. Peter Giannopoulos of the Richmond Hill-based Pig Kahuna said they applied to be in the Ribfest and believed it was a good choice to do so.

“I love it,” he said. “What a friendly community. Wonderful people.”

Giannopoulos said they heard about the Amherstburg Ribfest from their colleagues.

“We heard from other ribbers it’s a great place to come,” he said. “We loved coming down.”

Derek Borlier of Crabby’s BBQ Shack said they love coming to the Amherstburg Rotary’s Ribfest and enjoy the proximity the town has to the U.S. border.

“It’s nice here. I love it,” said Borlier. “It’s a nice, quiet little town.”

Ribs Royale won for best ribs and sauce in both the people’s choice and judge’s categories. Second and third place winners in the people’s choice best sauce category were Chop Shop and Pig Kahuna respectively while Pig Kahuna and Chop Shop took second and third respectively for best ribs in the people’s choice division. The judges named Pig Kahuna second bests sauce while Crabby’s took third while the same finish was reported in the judges’ best ribs category.
