Lady Cards fast pitch play at Centennial Park May 7

Spring has arrived and with it comes the familiar sounds of the crack of the bat and the slap of the ball hitting leather. The 2016 season marks the return of a long absent local pastime, Amherstburg Cardinals girls fastpitch!

This year, the “Lady Cards” will field two teams in the 2000 and 2003 birth years and compete for championships in both Canada and the United States. Both teams feature a number of highly skilled athletes from Amherstburg and Essex County. Local fans can get their first look at our diamond divas May 7 following the Amherstburg Minor Baseball season opening parade when the 2000 team hosts teams from LaSalle, Byron and Springfield at Centennial Park starting at 11 a.m.

The 2003 team started with a tournament on the weekend of April 22 in Livonia, Michigan and won it! They will then be playing a number of exhibitions in Amherstburg through the month of May to showcase the team in our hometown.

Amherstburg has always been a hotbed of talent for athletics and these girls are no exception. We look forward to local support and the opportunity for the girls to play in front of their hometown, family and friends, as many have had to pursue their passion for the sport in other centers in the past, say head coaches Mike Prescott and Jeff Simons. Amherstburg is truly an outstanding town; we haven’t even stepped on the diamond and the support has been awesome. Many people have stopped by the Libro Centre where the teams train in the off season to watch and lend encouragement and the citizens and merchants have been incredibly supportive. Come out and see these girls play and you are sure to catch CARDS FEVER!!!
