After an absence of less than two weeks, taxi service has returned to the town of Amherstburg.

Amherstburg Taxi began operating at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, with two taxis hitting the streets to serve the community. Owner Abdul Farah noted there has been a lot of Internet traffic about the reemergence of taxi service in Amherstburg but wants to get the word out more.

Currently, there are two taxis in service. Amherstburg Taxi is using the same vehicles that have been used by the former South Shore Taxi, the latter having closed Feb. 19.

“I live in this town and drove South Shore Taxi and everyone knows me,” said Farah. “I’m a part of this community.”

Farah said he sees the need in the community for a taxi service, as there were people who needed it to go get groceries and to pick up their prescriptions.

“I had to do it,” he said.

There are many customers who are relieved there is a taxi service back up and running in Amherstburg, he added.

Calling it a “community effort” to re-launch a local taxi service, Farah is thankful for the support.

Anyone needing a taxi can call 519-736-1761. More information on Amherstburg Taxi can be found on the company’s Facebook page.

Amherstburg Taxi’s hours of operation are 6 a.m.-12 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, 24 hours a day Thursday through Saturday and 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.
