Deputy Mayor Ron Sutherland is seeking a higher office.

Sutherland filed his papers Friday morning and is running for the mayor’s chair in the 2014 municipal election. Saying there has been a lack of information coming from town hall and changing financial numbers, Sutherland said now is the time for new leadership in Amherstburg.

“I’ve been toying with the idea for over a year,” said Sutherland, adding he made the decision to run before Christmas.

“We’ll see where it goes,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of support.”

Sutherland said many people have approached him on the street about a mayoral run and “now I’m confirming the rumor.” He said he declared early to get his name out there but said campaigning will occur in the months ahead.

“As a long-term resident and current deputy mayor of Amherstburg, I am genuinely concerned regarding the financial status that shrouds our municipality,” he stated. “The town needs leadership in the dire straits we’re in.”

Sutherland doesn’t feel that leadership is occurring now adding that he was one of the people that reached out to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs for advice on how to proceed. He added that the story in the Jan. 29 issue of the River Town Times where CAO Mike Phipps said the budget will likely not go to council until at least the last week of March was the first he heard of that timeframe.

“Suffice it to say, the town needs new leadership and I’ll certainly bring that to the table,” said Sutherland. “There is a definite need for new and caring leadership.”

Although he contemplated running for mayor in 2010, Sutherland said he opted to run for deputy mayor. He wanted municipal experience before seeking the mayor’s position.

“Over the past three years, I have gained immeasurable knowledge in municipal and county governance,” he said. “My voting pattern has, and always will continue to be, in the best interest of all residents.”

Sutherland believes he is ready for a move up to the mayor’s chair. He said he will reveal more of his platform in the months to come.

“I feel confident of my capabilities to be the mayor,” said Sutherland. “I have total faith in myself to perform the duties of the mayor.”

The municipal election is Monday, Oct. 27.
