Suspicious package not a risk to public safety: police



The Amherstburg Police Service responded to a residence on Seymour St. Monday night in regards to a suspicious package.

The package was discovered under the complainant’s front porch and after reading some information on the internet, Amherstburg police state the complainant believed that the package was radioactive.

Police got the call around 8:45 p.m.

As a precaution, police secured the area and contacted the Windsor Fire Services Hazardous Materials Unit to attend the scene. The Amherstburg Fire Department stated they also attended the scene, along with Essex-Windsor EMS.

Roads were closed in the area for just over two hours. All roads were open by 11:30 p.m.

After verifying several different readings related to the package, Windsor Fire Services determined the package was inert and there was no risk for public safety. Police say the package is to be disposed of.

The Amherstburg Police Service is thanking the Windsor Fire Services “for their prompt response and assistance.”
