Local senior citizens who received Meals on Wheels just prior to Christmas also received a bonus thanks to the Amherstburg Stars pee wee minor team and Amherstburg Community Services.

Members of the pee wee minors accompanied Meals on Wheels volunteer Alex Willar on her rounds Dec. 23 as Willar delivered meals to seniors in Caldwell Towers North, Caldwell Towers South and the Wesview Apartments. The team didn’t just go to assist with bringing the seniors their lunches, but they also delivered the stockings they had collected goods for just weeks earlier.

Seniors reacted with joy, which sometimes led to a few tears, as they accepted the gifts from team representatives which included coaches, parents but specifically players Matteo Palumbo, Nathan Decaro, Max Jones and Matthew Wismer.

“It warms my heart to see you kids do something like this,” Mary Mawhorter told the players.

Husband Ed Mawhorter added, “it’s wonderful.”

The program, run through ACS, saw treats and necessary supplies such as personal hygiene items delivered to the senior citizens.

“Wonderful” was also used by Helen Martlin while Frances Webster also used the adjective as she fought back tears when receiving her stocking.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea and a pleasant surprise,” said Webster.

Willar was happy to see the smiles on the faces of the seniors she delivers to.

“I just adore them,” she said. “It’s such a pleasure. They are helping me too. I have have such joy doing it. They are darling people, every one of them.”
