Students and staff at St. Bernard School got to remember loved ones who died of cancer as well as Terry Fox last week.

The school raised $200 in last Wednesday morning’s Terry Fox Run, though teacher/organizer Candace Zimmerman acknowledged they weren’t anticipating a large total.

“We were hoping to get a toonie per student,” said Zimmerman. “A ‘Toonie for Terry’ is what we called it.

“Every little bit helps.”

Zimmerman said many of the students know who Fox is and what he accomplished, though Fox’s Marathon of Hope was in 1980. Fox died June 28, 1981 at the age of 22. One student, said Zimmerman, idolized Fox to the point where Zimmerman was going to give him the Terry Fox shirt she had.

“They’ve heard about him year after year,” said Zimmerman.

All proceeds from last Wednesday’s Terry Fox Run, which was held in the schoolyard, will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.

“It’s such a great cause and, sadly, everyone is affected (by cancer),” she said. “It’s nice to inspire people to want to make a difference.”
