Sr. Cards pick up win against Leamington

Special to the RTT

The past week saw the Senior Cardinals rained out in Chatham on Friday but great weather was had on Sunday.

Leamington came to town looking to gain a victory with their ace Willie Froese on the mound. The lengthy lefthander was stellar on the mound, giving up only three hits and two runs.

Those two runs stood up since Mike “Junior” Purdie was even better, Junior went the distance, giving up only five hits (only two hard hit balls) while striking out a season high nine.

Amherstburg catcher John Bondy compared catching Purdie to playing a video game.

Mike “Junior” Purdie delivers the ball to the plate as he strikes out one of his nine K’s on the day.

“You just tell him split fastball up high and inside and it’s there every time,” said Bondy. “It’s like I’m playing a video game out there.”

The boys were flawless in the field and combined with Purdie’s pitching they were able to pull out a 2-1 win. Justin (Woody) Wood, Quinton Harris and Junior each had a hit with RBI’s going to Woody and John Bondy.

In the field, some great plays were made up the middle between Woody at short and Nick Price at second. Sound pitching and defense will win you a lot of games and it is just this that is starting to turn the Cardinal’s season around.

Come out on Wednesday as they are home to the Harrow Srs at 7 p.m. and then follow that up on Sunday against league leader Chatham at 1 p.m. at home. See you at the ballpark.
