The Amherstburg Cardinals are 3-0 in Essex County Senior League play after a win Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals downed the Essex Jrs. 6-3 Sunday at the Libro Centre. The teams were tied at two after three innings but the fourth inning proved to be the difference maker.

After Essex went up 3-2 in the top half of the inning, Amherstburg scored four of their own in the bottom half. Brad Lepine crossed the plate with the first of the four runs after he scored on a wild pitch. Josh Sikich drew a bases loaded walk a few batters later before Anthony Sauro drove in a pair of runs with a single.

There was no scoring the rest of the way, but there were a bit of fireworks at the end. Tempers flared as the two teams came onto the field with a shove to Amherstburg’s Mac Ouellette being the spark to the incident. The two teams were quickly separated and returned to their dugouts.

Amherstburg coach Dennis Ouellette commented that there was bad blood that carried over from last season.

Mitch Lepine picked up the win on the mound and played down the post-game issues, focusing on the Cardinals’ win.

“It was a good team game,” said Mitch. “Everyone played a part. Everyone had a role. The pitchers did great and we had good at-bats.”

As for his own performance, Mitch Lepine said “I was trying to throw strikes and let the defense do their jobs and they did.”

A game against the Harrow junior team originally scheduled for last Wednesday did not occur because the Harrow team has folded. The Cardinals were supposed to play their first road game in Tecumseh last Thursday against the Tecumseh senior team but that was rained out.

Their next game is Wednesday night at home against Tecumseh 18U at 7:30 p.m. before returning to the Libro Centre Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a game against the Essex Srs.
