The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team is riding a three-game winning streak into this week’s action.

The Cardinals capped the week with a 7-5 win in Essex Sunday night, two nights after they travelled to Woodslee and outlasted the Orioles 9-8.

The first of the three wins came last Wednesday night at the Libro Centre’s premiere diamond. The Cardinals downed visiting Belle River 13-3 with the game ending in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the mercy rule. Anthony Sauro went four-for-four in the victory over Belle River.

“The bats came alive tonight,” said Sauro. “I was seeing (the ball) good.”

Sauro scored two runs during the Belle River game. He said more players were at the game, as the Cardinals sometimes miss players due to work and other commitments.

“We had more of our players back tonight,” said Sauro. “When our players are here, we have a good lineup.”

The Cardinals lost the night before against first-place Walker Homesites 5-4 with the winning run scoring off a walk-off hit. Sauro said Josh Sikich pitched well in the loss.

“It’s good to bounce back fast, for sure,” he said. “Forget the hard ones and move on.”

The Cardinals play a pair of home games this week, hosting Harrow tonight at the Libro Centre and also playing host to Essex Sunday night. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Amherstburg sits in third place in the Essex County Senior League standings with a 13-5 record.
