Sr. Cardinals blown out in season opener

By Joel Charron

It’s the type of game the Amherstburg Sr. Cardinals wish they could hit the reset button.

The Sr. Cardinals opened the 2011 season at home Wednesday evening, turning in a dreadful, error filled performance that saw them get blown out by the visiting Chatham Sr. Brewers 12-2.

“I know the players are embarrassed, I’m embarrassed,” said manager Kevin “Bubba” Souligny.

Mike “Junior” Purdie took the mound as starting pitcher and held the Brewers to one run in two innings of work. Chatham’s runs came off an RBI single to left field in the top of the second inning.

Amherstburg would draw even with Chatham when Mark Beaudoin drove in Purdie with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the third inning.

Adam Ouellette came in for relief and pitched two solid innings, however Ouellette couldn’t get support from his defense. A few Amherstburg errors in the fourth inning led to two runs crossing the plate for the Brewers for a 3-1 lead

After fielding a ball down the third base line Adam Ouellette rifles the ball to first base for an out.

The very next inning the errors continued to plague the Sr. Cards as another five runs were added to Chatham’s score.

“I think a lot of nerves played into some of those errors,” said Souligny.

Amherstburg added one more run to their score, as Beaudoin drove in Bryce Penny for his second RBI of the game.

The top of the sixth inning wasn’t much better for the struggling Sr. Cards as more errors haunted the home team as Chatham scored four more runs to open the lead to 12-2.

Chatham shut down the Amherstburg offence, allowing only fours hits in 28 plate appearances.

“I really don’t know what to say,” said a stunned Trevor Mulder. “We have to do better, we will do better. It’s early in the season, we just made early in the season mistakes.”

Mulder agreed with Souligny’s assessment of players being nervous.

“We made a few mistakes that cost us runs. We will play better,” Mulder said.

“We will definitely play better…I promise you that,” said Souligny.

The Sr. Cardinals are back on the diamond on Sunday. May 15 at Leamington . Their next home game is Wed. May 25 at 7 p.m. against the Harrow Srs.
