The General Amherst senior boys volleyball team finished off the 2012 campaign with a dominating three set sweep of the Assumption Purple Raiders Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs won the set 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21.

“We are pretty happy with that game,” head coach Mike Balogh. “We had good passing, good hitting and all around excellent execution of the offense.”

In the first set Amherst fell behind by three points before settling in their groove and exploding for long point streaks.

In the third set, Amherst at one point led 15-3, however the Purple Raiders battled back and gave the Bulldogs a run for their money before eventually falling to the Bulldogs.

Balogh noted that Assumption had “some big boys” patrolling the net, which at first caused problems for the Amherst hitters.

Joel Wilson hammers the ball over an Assumption blocker.

“They learned their lesson early,” said Balogh. “They hit into the block the first couple of times then they started hitting around them the rest of the day. It was a really good match for us.”

Amherst hitter Joel Wilson said  once the Bulldogs were able to find their rhythm everything “starting clicking.”

“We were able to get some early, big hits and blocks. When that happens everyone kind of feeds off that,” said Wilson.

Wilson noted despite an upset loss to Cardinal Carter, the Bulldogs have enjoyed a successful season, completing the regular season with a 9-1 record, however the real test will begin once playoffs begin.

“We have high hopes heading into the playoffs. We just need a good pass to the setter and we’ll get the hits we’re looking for,” said Wilson.

Bulldogs are ranked in the middle of the pack heading into the post-season, which is an appropriate seeding according to Balogh.

“We are ranked right where we should be but I think we can really show people that we know how to play volleyball,” said Balogh.

Balogh said he has no expectations heading into playoffs but states they will go as far as their talent will take them.

“We’ve focused on hard work and defense all year long so hopefully we have a nice long playoff run,” he said.
