Small Ball wraps up another successful season

Future General Amherst Bulldogs and Lady Gens got a taste of basketball as the Amherstburg Basketball Club’s “Small Ball” program wrapped up last week.

Roughly, 60 children from ages four to nine took part in the eight-week program at Malden Central Public School. The younger kids took the court from 6-7 p.m. while the older players followed from 7-8 p.m.

Frank Palumbo, who runs the Small Ball program with Brad Bondy, Cathy Hedges and Tim Dodds said this is the fourth year the program has been in operation.

He added that the program has become so popular that they had to cut off registration because the gymnasium cannot accommodate any more players.

“We had to cut it off. We just can’t take any more,” said Palumbo.

Along with Palumbo, Bondy, Hedges and Dodds, the Amherstburg girls travel team help coach the teams.

The Grade 8 and 10 girls travel players assist the younger players in such skills as ball control, dribbling, passing and footwork.

“The older kids get a chance to give back to the program,” said Palumbo.
