Small Ball wraps up another successful season

Another year of Small Ball has wrapped up.

The program, a side project of the Amherstburg Basketball Club, ran at Malden Central Public School for the last eight weeks. Every Thursday night, children from ages 5-7 made up the first session while those aged 7-9 made up the latter session.

Remax sales representative Brad Bondy and Malden Central teacher Frank Palumbo run the program.

“The kids are excellent. The parents are fabulous. We always have a waiting list,” said Bondy.

Bondy said the children learn about the different skills of basketball while focusing on getting  exercise and socializing with other children. Bondy added that there are five different stations where the children learn different aspects of the game.

Players and coaches of this year’s Small Ball program take a moment for a picture.

Small Ball has been running for five years with 60 children being the limit of children accepted.

“Every year we get more and more people on the waiting list,” said Bondy.

Bondy added he is proud of the competitors as well as the coaches and parents. He said the program runs once per year but he and Palumbo often hear requests to expand the program to as many as three or four times per year.

According to Bondy, students from Malden Central and General Amherst help coach the program. He added that he and Palumbo never have trouble convincing the older students to participate in Small Ball.

“It’s something they all want to do and something they really enjoy doing,” said Bondy.
