Seasons Amherstburg hosted their own chili cook-off recently and used proceeds raised to give back to a local cause at the same time.

The chili cook-off was used as a fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and raised $660 for the local chapter. Heather Vandenham, lifestyle services manager at Seasons Amherstburg, said residents and the public could pay $5 just for a bowl of chili or $10 to be able to judge the six entries.

“All of the money is getting donated to the Heart & Stroke Foundation,” explained Vandenham. “It’s just our way to give back to the community.”

Chef Beau Veldhuis said staff was allowed to sign up while he prepared a “house chili” as well. There were no real requirements to enter, he stated, adding one of the six entries was a vegetarian chili.

“We just left it up to each entry,” he said. “We just asked people to keep the spice level down.”

Veldhuis said Seasons is hoping to have another fundraiser later in the year. He believed an event like their chili cook-off was a good way to get family members in, visiting their loved ones and enjoying the retirement home.
