‘Run the Greens’ set for March 20

By Joel Charron

“Run the Greens” is just weeks away and organizer Mickey Fryer is more than pleased on how the 5K fundraising event is shaping up.

“I’m honestly really overwhelmed,” said Fryer. “It’s really exciting to see everyone step up and help out for this cause.”

“Run the Greens” is the first event of the year for Walkers and Runners Across the County of Essex (WRACE) with the proceeds going towards Team Diabetes. The event will take place on Sunday, March 20 at Wildwood Golf and RV Resort with a 10 a.m. start time.

According to Fryer, 80 participants have already registered and many more are expected. He added that 25 of the 80 participants registered to walk the greens instead of run.

Fryer has also noticed that the “Run the Greens” event is attracting a wide range of people.

“We’re getting a good mix of young, old, families, runners and walkers,” he said. “We want to make this a family orientated event. That’s why it’s ‘run’ the greens and not ‘race’ the greens because we want all types of abilities.”

The only setback that Fryer said he has faced is that he hasn’t been able to finalize the course as of yet.

“We’re just trying to wait for a break in the weather so we can get into the golf course and see how much we can run on the route,” said Fryer.

He said that they haven’t decided if the event will feature a trek into the Greenway.

With a minimum pledge donation of $40, participants will be treated to a pasta lunch after the 5K event provided by Cramdon’s. However, Fryer has noticed a lot of people so far have gone above and beyond the required donation amount.

“A lot of people are really just getting out there and raising the funds rather than just paying the registration fee, which is even more helpful,” said Fryer.

People can still register for the “Run the Greens” at www.wrace.org.

The fee is $32 for WRACE members, $35 for non-WRACE members and $65 for families with three to five participants.

Everyone will receive a free tech T-shirt, however early registration will guarantee the correct size.

There will be a $100 prize to the top male and female runners and walker. Medals will be also awarded to the top three in each age group.
