The Harrow Arena was filled with enthusiasm and laughter on New Year's Eve as approximately 250 community members braved the rain and snowy weather to join in the town's annual ball drop and fireworks event.
With spirits high, attendees celebrated the evening in style, proving once again that Harrow has unbreakable community spirit.
Event organizer Dennis McLean was thrilled with the turnout, emphasizing, “the arena is the perfect venue for this event! We have free public skating, Jangles the Clown keeping the kids entertained, a craft table, face painting, and despite the weather, the kids were outside playing road hockey. One mother even stayed out there for two hours!”
As families gathered, many enjoyed hot chocolate and an array of tasty treats that kept the festive atmosphere alive.
Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy praised the community’s spirit, stating, “this annual tradition is the collaboration of the Harrow Chamber, REFAC Industries, and local businesses. It’s heartwarming to see families come together, rain or shine. We’re proud to have our own ball drop here in Harrow!”
The main attraction of the event was the impressive 8-foot ball created a few years ago by the Keller family, who were all in attendance to raise and drop the ball.
The idea was inspired by the iconic New York City ball drop. Adorned with 1,000 lights, the ball was raised with anticipation and dropped just before the fireworks illuminated the night sky.
“It’s inspiring to see our community come together for this tradition," said Bondy. “I want to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who make this possible. Without their support, we couldn’t create such memorable events. A special thanks also goes to the Town of Essex staff for their hard work and dedication.”
Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, the evening was a success, highlighting Harrow's strong community spirit. As the ball dropped residents rang in the New Year with joy, and a sense of togetherness that makes Harrow a truly special place to call home.
