The latest fundraiser for the Bryerswood Youth Camp Optimist Club (BYCOC) brought out nearly 100 people.

The BYCOC held its annual rib or chicken dinner last Saturday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall in River Canard with just under 100 tickets sold. People had the opportunity to eat-in or take-out with the dinner being an annual tradition for the BYCOC. There was also a 50/50 draw and raffle during the dinner.

CKRT Border City Radio broadcast live from the dinner.

BYCOC president Kathi Poupard said they have been presenting the dinner since they acquired the camp in 2021.

Proceeds from this year’s rib or chicken dinner have a specific purpose, as they will help fund further upgrades in the camp’s activity centre as well as in the main lodge building.

“The money is going towards a new electrical panel in the activity centre and a new electrical hook-up for a heat pump in the lodge,” said Poupard. “About $5,000 is what that’s going to cost in total.”

Poupard indicated they are entertaining the idea of having monthly events in the activity centre for the public. Caitlin Gonneau, a camp director at Bryerswood Youth Camp, said nothing is finalized yet but events could include bingo nights, movie nights and other ideas they can come up with.

Poupard added they are open to what the community wants to see.

Gonneau added they will soon be putting out a call for more volunteers. The Bryerswood Youth Camp holds its next PD Day camp Feb. 14 with the theme being “Sugar Rush.” People can also sign their children up for March Break and summer camps.

The Bryerswood Youth Camp will also be hosting its Earth Day even April 26 and a cleanup April 27. There is a Family Fun Day planned for May 4.
