The origin of the blue haze that wafted over Amherstburg Friday afternoon is under investigation by the Amherstburg Fire Department.

Residents had reported a haze which some said also had a chemical-like odour to it.

Deputy Fire Chief Jim Ouellette told the River Town Times shortly after 4:30 p.m. that the haze had dissipated but said numerous calls came in around 3 p.m.

“We did a very thorough investigation,” said Ouellette.

Ouellette said all the proper authorities and agencies have been contacted. That includes the Michigan State Police, who are investigating on the U.S. side.

“We went through all of our emergency procedures and did all of our notifications,” he said.

However, the cause is not yet known.

“We haven’t been able to determine where it came from,” said Ouellette. “It doesn’t look like it came from this area.”

Ouellette added the haze moved slowly towards Tecumseh and dissipated. He said the Amherstburg Fire Department had numerous people in the field, including visiting local industry, but were not able to pinpoint a cause as of Friday afternoon.

In situations such as that, Ouellette said people can call 211 and if they are experiencing any discomfort or health issues or simply have concerns, stay inside and close all windows and doors.
