An organizational shakeup has occurred with the Town of Amherstburg with three managers let go Tuesday morning.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Mike Phipps confirmed to the River Town Times Tuesday that director of engineering and infrastructure Lou Zarlenga, director of corporate services Val Sequeira and manager of human resources Carol Bendo were let go by the town.

“We undertook a reorganization,” said Phipps.

Phipps said he has been looking at the organizational structure since becoming CAO and whether or not the town “had the right people in the right places.”

“This morning I rolled out the reorganizational plan and those were the three people affected,” said Phipps.  “I’ve assured staff that is the extent of the reorganization. I’ve gone out and reassured staff that was it and they are part of the team moving forward.”

Phipps told the RTT that Wendy Dade is the interim director of finance. Phipps said he wanted to create a standalone finance department and Dade will head it until a permanent replacement is found.

The legislative services department has been renamed the corporate and legal services department with Brenda Percy leading that. Director of recreation and culture Dean Collver has had the fire department added to his portfolio with his title changed to director of community services.

Phipps added that Antonietta Giofu has been named as the new director of engineering and public works.

The town has combined responsibilities for some staff as part of the reorganization, Phipps stated.

Deputy Mayor Ron Sutherland said it was an administrative decision that culminated in the restructuring.

“This was an administrative decision originated by the CAO,” said Sutherland.

A phone message was left for Mayor Wayne Hurst Tuesday afternoon but that was not returned by the time this issue of the River Town Times went to press.
