A new festival is being planned for Amherstburg in late April with this one emphasizing the town’s rich history.

The Rivertown Living History Festival is planned for April 23-24 in King’s Navy Yard Park in the area of the Commissariat. The festival is being sponsored by the Provincial Marine naval history group with activities being from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

Shaymus the Storyteller, whose real name is Doug Robinson, performs at Richmond Terrace Long Term Care facility last Friday morning. Robinson is also a member of the Provincial Marine, and the local reenactment group is organizing the “Rivertown Living History Festival” planned for April 23-24 near the Commissariat.

“The purpose of the festival is to bring together, in one location, a wide array of organizations that are involved in local history. We hope to provide an opportunity to the community to easily learn more and make connections with our remarkable past,” said Doug Robinson, Provincial Marine communications officer. “At this time, we have commitments from nearly a dozen groups who are wanting to participate, with more groups expressing interest.”
The event will be in two parts, Robinson explained, with the community organizations filling the area between the Commissariat and Dalhousie St., and the Provincial Marine setting up an historic encampment between the Commissariat and the Detroit River.
“There will be entertainment throughout the day, hands-on displays, musketry and cannon fire, including the Provincial Marine’s traditional ‘Noon Gun’,” added Robinson, who is also known to many as “Shaymus the Storyteller.”
More details will be announced soon, including a list of participating groups and entertainment.
