The Amherstburg Family Health Team (AFHT) has welcomed a new family physician to its ranks.

Dr. Heba Youssef has become the fourth doctor to practice out of the AFHT, joining Dr. Tim O’Callahan, Dr. Danish Mazhar and Dr. Pavan Chand. Dr. David Carswell also works under the AFHT umbrella, but works out of Harrow. Youssef has been working out of the AFHT for roughly one month and is accepting new patients.

Youssef said the town’s designation as “Safest Community in Canada” for three straight years factored into her decision as did the setup with the AFHT.

“I like the building, the town, the group of physicians and the staff I work with,” she said.

Youssef is originally from Egypt and studied at Ain-Shams University in Cairo before coming to Canada. She also studied at the University of Manitoba, where she performed her residency, but also has roots in this area. After living in London, she moved to Windsor and was a physician assistant in Harrow.

Upon returning from Manitoba, she moved back to this area where she worked in walk-in clinics in Windsor before deciding to come to Amherstburg. She said she enjoys being part of a rural practice such as Amherstburg.

“I like the co-operation between members,” added Youssef. “I like to work in a complete clinic, which helps us provide complete service to our patients.”

A doctor for 20 years, Youssef said she enjoys working not just with one patient but with families. She believes that knowing a “family dynamic” helps provide better services to patients.

Thus far, things are going well in her new practice, Youssef reported.

“People are so friendly,” she said. “All are welcoming.”

Youssef indicated she will be in Amherstburg for the long-haul.

“I like the stability and I like the people,” she said. “It’s my plan to stay here in Amherstburg.”

AFHT executive director Ann Robson said they plan on adding a fifth physician to the Amherstburg site in the fall, sixth overall. There also will be a new executive director in the fall as Robson said she is retiring at the end of July.
