Mudpuppy Gallery looking for submissions for upcoming exhibit

By Jolene Perron

What can you do with a piece of barn board? The Mudpuppy Gallery wants to find out!

Now until August 25, the gallery invites everyone to come pick up a piece of barn board from their establishment. The board measures at approximately 10’ by 5’ and costs $15 to submit. The show itself will take place from August 31 until September 11.

“Cut it, shape it, sand it, turn it into a bird house, whatever you’d like to do.” said Cheryl Maclellan, one of the six artists at the gallery.

Artists can be young, old, professional or just beginning their artistic journey. Cheryl says there is nothing they won’t accept, for the purpose of the gallery is to promote creativity in our town.

Robert Maclellan, also one of the six artists at the gallery, was the one who came up with the unique idea after speaking with a friend of his who was renovating his barn. His friend told him if he could find something to do with the barn boards, he could have them. Robert himself has been doing a lot of wood work lately, and was curious to see what others could do with it.

“That’s the challenge, to see what you can do with that thing (barn board), and it should be interesting to see what people come up with in the art crowd.” said Robert. He also said they have had a lot of interest in the contest. He originally cut 20 boards and they are gone.

A closing ceremony is being planned, as well as a contest for the most unique creation. The winner will be decided upon by a voting process and prizes will be awarded.

You can pick up your piece of barn board any time the gallery is open, Wednesday through Sunday from12 pm – 8 pm. The gallery is located at 264 Dalhousie St. For more information, visit their website
