Since Grade 7, Mitch Girard has dreamed his basketball skills would score him a scholarship.

That dream has now become reality as the 6’3”, 215-pound 18-year-old has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at St. Clair College.

“I was pretty excited when I found out they (St. Clair) were going to offer me a scholarship,” said Girard.

Amherst’s Mitch Girard recently accepted a scholarship to play basketball for St.Clair College

Girard said the scholarship is paid per semester. The first year he will receive $500 per semester, followed by $600 in the second year, $750 in the third year and $1,000 for the fourth year.  Girard said he would major in Business Marketing and Administration.

Girard said he’s ready to play at the next level.

“I’ve been working my butt off,” said Girard. “I’ve been going to St. Clair to work out least two or three times a week. I just want to be there, I want to be a part of the team and contribute.”

Girard mentioned that there were a few smaller universities in the states that were looking  at him but opted to stay in Canada because of financial reasons.

“Staying home is much cheaper,” joked Girard.

Girard will have a familiar face on the team, as he will be reunited with former Amherst basketball sensation Alex Temsey.

“We’ve been shooting around together and plan to do that a few times a week,” he explained. “We are both really excited to play together again, it should be a fun time.”

Girard said he brings an inside presence to St. Clair that can score and grab rebounds.

“I’m a good offensive rebounder that can keep the play alive,” said Girard. “I want to be more of an outside threat as well, that way I can go inside and outside and stretch the defense.”
