Midget Minors pick up tie and win against Essex

Special to the RTT

The Midget Minor’s hosted the Essex Ravens for a home at home series this weekend.

The first game was played at the UCCU on Saturday night.

The first period nearly ended scoreless until a last second scramble allowed the Raven’s power play unit to sneak one past Stars goalie Josh Paquette for the opening goal with only 2.8 seconds on the clock. The Ravens would pop in two more goals in the second period for a 3-0 before Cory Burns put one in the net for an unassisted goal.

The Midget Minors took control of the third period, with Burns scoring another unassisted goal and Garett Meloche found the back of the net with 6:41 remaining in the period.

The Stars would eventually settle for a 3-3 tie.

The second game was played at the Essex Arena Sunday evening.

The scoring started only minutes into the game when Avery Brush got the games first goal, assisted by Braeden Derksen and Mitch Holden.  The Star’s goalie Wes Werner was solid in net throughout the game, keeping the pressure on Essex throughout and coming up with huge saves time after time.  As the first period wound down, Derksen rifled a shot from mid ice, which took a hop and then got through the Raven’s goaltender for Derksen’s second goal of the game.  In the final seconds of the first the Star’s once again drove toward the Essex net resulting in an unassisted goal by Garett Meloche.

Amherstburg added to their lead in the second off a rebound goal from Spencer Benenuto.

Essex would score their only goal of the game moment later on the power play.

Mitch Holden added Amherstburg fifth goal as the Midget Minors won 5-1.
