The Amherstburg Midget Major Stars have been ranked amongst the top Midget “A” team in the province.

According to Myhockeyrankings.com, a site dedicated to youth hockey in North America, the Stars appeared in the Ontario Midget “A” rankings in the seventh spot.

Not bad for a team that wasn’t even ranked a week ago.

“I think is very interesting,’ said Stars head coach Matt Fox. “We have a long way to go. A lot of their teams have a lot of their schedule left to play. But it’s nice to see how you measure up against the rest of the province.”

In 11 games (including tournaments) the Stars have out scored their opponent 52-13 and have not allowed a team to score more than three goals against them.

“It’s a good spot to start off the season,” said Stars captain Eric Shaw. “Obviously we want to grab the top spot, but we’re going to have to work hard for that.”

Shaw and Fox both agree that although it is nice to be recognized for the work they have put in so far a long road lies ahead of them and they can’t get let ego get the best of them.

“I’m telling the players to keep a level head, that’s always important. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we’re only part way into our league,” said Fox. “It’s good to be confident but at the same time we can’t be over confident. We have a lot of work to put in still.”

Fox said the ranking are a good barometer to see how other teams in Ontario are playing throughout the season.

“You get to see team playing other teams that you never see all year, so it kind of gives you a barometer if you maybe played a team that played another team. It gives us a little insight that way,” said Fox.

Shaw admits the team does have their eye on the spot.

“I think we all would like to get up to the top of the rankings and be known by the whole province,” said Shaw.

Being ranking in the top 10 makes the target on the Stars back a little bigger, however Shaw doesn’t think it will have an affect on the team

“We already target on our back coming into this season so this is nothing new,” said Shaw.
