The Amherstburg Cardinals midget baseball team can check off one item on their summer do to list.

Last week, the Cardinals secured the number one seed heading in the Sun Parlour Baseball Association Midget playoffs Aug. 9-11.

“These guys earned that top seed,” said Cardinals manager Kris Meloche. “They played good, from the first guy down to the last guy.”

All-star shortstop Kyle Goodchild said grabbing the league’s top seed was a team goal from day one.

“Coming into the season we knew we going to be a strong team, a lot stronger than in previous years,” he said. “We knew that we were going to be a threat in the league.”

Goodchild noted their defense and team pitching has been the backbone of the Cardinals season but once everyone in the lineup started hitting the ball, things got rolling.

“We are very good defensively and have a lot of good, solid arms,” said Goodchild. “Later in the year we started picking up the bats a lot and I think that’s what helped us grab the number one seed.”

The Cardinals finished the season 11-4.

The Cardinals kick off the double elimination tournament on Friday against twelfth seed Dresden in Chatham.

If the Cardinals can win their first two games, they will have a bye to the semi-finals.

“We have to win, plain and simple. If we win we will be rewarded,” said Meloche.

In order to win, Meloche said the Cardinals have to come ready to play. Although Meloche has all the confidence in the world in his players, he feels the Cardinals have yet to reach their potential.

“Sometimes we come to the diamond not prepared and not ready to play and it shows,” he said. “But there is a lot of talent on this team. Once they get woken up, they start playing.”

“We won’t be able to give teams a lead,” he said. “We have a bulls-eye on our back.”

With the league championship on the line, Goodchild believes the Cardinals will be ready and eager to take the field.

“I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll be ready,” he stated.
