Life is a little more comfortable for Sean Peer.

Thanks to a $10,000 grant by the President’s Choice Children Charity on behalf on Meloche’s No Frills, Lara Peer was able to renovate her bathroom to accommodate her son Sean, 5, who suffers from Down syndrome and is confined to a wheelchair.

“We are very excited to present another grant to a deserving family,” said Chris Meloche, owner of Meloche’s No Frills.

Peer said if it weren’t for the grant money from Meloche’s No Frills they would have had to pay over $12,000 out of their own pocket.

“This is such a huge help,” said Peer.

Southshore Construction out of Lakeshore did the renovations and according to Peer did a “wonderful job.”

The renovations took roughly one month to complete.

“They literally gutted the entire bathroom and redid it,” she said.

With a proper bathroom to suit Sean’s needs, Peer said she no longer has to lift Sean into the bathtub; instead she can roll him into the tub.

Peer joked that Sean was never a big fan of showers but is making the transition nicely.

“He is doing really good with the shower, he’s getting used to it,” she said.  “How they had it designed is really nice and it’s really easy to use.”

Peer said Sean is “doing well” these days and mentioned that they haven’t had a hospital visit in over three years.

Over the last four years   Amherstburg families have been granted over $52,000 thanks in part to the President’s Choice Children Charity.

“We will continued to do our part in helping local families,” said Meloche.

President’s Choice Children’s Charity is dedicated to making difficult lives a little easier. The focus is to remove some of the obstacles that make everyday living extremely difficult and provide these young people with a renewed independence and freedom by providing funding for adaptive equipment, environmental modifications, therapy and more.

Loblaw’s Companies Limited absorbs the administrative costs, so 100 per cent of every dollar raised goes directly to helping children.

Meloche’s No Frills raises funds through employee payroll contributions and various drives throughout the year.

“A huge thank you goes out to our staff for their contributions and also to our customers for their ongoing support of the drives,” said Meloche.
