It was a day of mixed emotions for Jan Stefko.

Stefko, who taught special needs children at Anderdon Public School, said her farewells on the last day of classes last week as she retired after a 29-year career. The last 17 years of her career was spent at Anderdon Public.

“I’m excited to start the next chapter of my life with my family but I’m sad to leave the students I’ve worked with for many years,” she said. “Students are what drive you to do what you do.”

Stefko started her career in the Churchwood Developmental Centre in Windsor before making stops as a developmental programmer at both Notre Dame Public School and Holy Names High School. Once she obtained her teaching certificate, she came to Anderdon Public.

“It’s the absolutely most rewarding job a person could ask for,” said Stefko.

With her husband already retired, Stefko said they plan to do some travelling now that she has joined him in retirement and both are in good health. She added she also plans to spend more time with her two grandchildren.
