Lauren West took another step in becoming MuchMusic’s next VJ by advancing to the top 40 in MuchMusic’s 2013 VJ search.

West, 21, a graduate of Fanshawe College’s Television and Broadcasting program began her journey a few weeks ago.

Armed with a video camera and a bubbly personality, West explained and described why she was the right person to be MuchMusic’s next VJ in her three-minute video.

West said the production of her video profile took roughly two days and was submitted to MuchMusic amongst hundreds of other contestants.

After a few weeks of open competition, West was contacted by MuchMusic notifying her that her profile had gained enough votes to move into the top 40.

“I was in a Skype interview when they told me,” said West. “I was really ecstatic, I guess you could say I was at a loss for words. I really didn’t know what to say so I just kept thanking them. It was definitely a good feeling.”

Last week, West, along with the 39 other contestants were introduced as the VJ Search Top 40.

Now that West has reached the next round, people will once again be able to vote on her profile. The profiles with the most votes will move on to the Top 20 and will take part in a reality show where the contestants will battle for MusicMusic’s next VJ.

The reality show for the Top 20 begins Monday, April 1.

West said becoming MuchMusic’s next VJ would be a “dream come true” for her.

“I took television because I love being in front of the camera,” she explained. “When everyone ever asked me what I wanted to do, if I can have any job in the world on TV I always wanted to be a MuchMusic VJ. I’ve had that in my head for years.”

West even attended an open casting call for a position with MuchMusic last November but was unsuccessful in landing the gig.

West said she has been working hard in promoting herself, utilizing social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

When West created a Facebook to help support her cause it gained 550 likes in just 24 hours.

“That’s 550 people that know that I have what it takes to do this,” said West. “If anyone has a chance at their dream job they are going to go for it, so I’ve been giving it my all. I think I have a pretty good chance.”
