The General Amherst Lady Gens dropped to 3-5 on the WECSSAA Tier 1 volleyball season after a pair of losses last week.

The Lady Gens dropped both matches two sets to one, the first being a home court loss to Tecumseh Vista Academy. The Vortex downed the Lady Gens 25-18 in the first set and 25-22 in the second, though the Lady Gens had an 8-3 lead at one point in the second set.

Amherst rallied in the third set and won 25-16 but Lady Gens’ head coach Jeff Miller wasn’t thrilled with the results. He noted the win in the third set was primarily due to substitutions made by Tecumseh Vista Academy.

“It wasn’t due to our good play,” he said.

The loss was summed up by Miller rather simply.

“For us, unfortunately the other team was better than us,” he said. “We have to play flawlessly. If not, we are going to lose.”

“We have to work extra hard to stay with teams,” added assistant coach Mary Ewer. “Hopefully they can pull it together.”

Miller admitted confidence may be dropping a bit but Ewer believes the girls are still motivated to come to practice and work hard.

“We don’t have enough offense,” said Miller.

The Lady Gens travelled to Lakeshore last Thursday afternoon for another match, this one against the St. Anne Saints. The Lady Gens dropped the first set 25-13 but rebounded in the second with a 26-24 victory. St. Anne took the match with a 25-20 win in the third set.

General Amherst plays at home Tuesday against Holy Names and travels to Massey Thursday. They end the regular season at home Jan. 25 versus St. Joseph.
