The General Amherst Lady Gens slo-pitch team made it to the county championship game only to have their gloves and bats betray them.

The Lady Gens lost 9-6 to Belle River Monday afternoon at Co-An Park in McGregor in a game where they didn’t hit or field as well as they could have.

“We had two bad defensive innings which cost us,” said third baseman Taylor Wright.

Wright said her and her teammates had a slow start and their bats didn’t come alive until the seventh inning.

“We were really good in the last inning,” she said.

Wright said things didn’t look good even when they were preparing for the game.

“We had a really bad warm-up,” she said. “We weren’t ready to play. I can honestly say it was the worst game we’ve ever had.”

The game was the opposite of the game they played earlier in the tournament. The Lady Gens downed Leamington 11-7 last Wednesday before the rest of the tournament was delayed until Monday due to rain.

“We had the best defensive plays we’ve ever done in our whole season,” said Wright, of the Leamington win.

The offense was better that game too, as Wright said they hit the ball hard and out of the infield.

“Our bats were awake,” said Wright.

Wright said she believed that the team had a good year, despite losing the county championship game and the right to play in the WECSSAA title game.

“We did have a great season,” stated Wright. “We had great chemistry on the whole team. There was no drama, nothing. We had the best chemistry in the three years I’ve been on the team.”
