The General Amherst Lady Gens have won one tournament, were finalists in another and are 1-1-1 in WECSSAA Tier 1 league play on the ice.

The girls hockey team at Amherst downed the St. Anne Saints 2-1 last Wednesday afternoon at the Libro Centre with captain Savannah Bouzide scoring both goals for the Lady Gens. Mackenzie Neal assisted on the first goal while Bouzide’s second goal was on a second period penalty shot.

Head coach Scott Hamelin said it was their fifth game in two days, as the Lady Gens were runners-up to Villanova in the Southern Ontario High School Hockey Classic. At that tournament, Hamelin said they beat Holy Names 3-0, Lambton-Kent 8-1 and L’Essor 3-2 in pool play before knocking off Chatham-Kent 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Villanova won the championship game 4-2.

“We just rain out of gas,” said Hamelin. “Our girls put forth a fantastic effort.”

The tournament win was earlier this season when they captured the Sandwich West Early Bird tournament. The Lady Gens went undefeated in that tournament.

Hamelin said the Lady Gens are playing Tier 1 against AAA and AAAA-sized schools. After winning WECSSAA and SWOSSAA at the AA level last year, he said other clubs are looking to make their mark against the Lady Gens this year.

The Lady Gens lost some players to graduation but have good rookies, Hamelin added. They are .500 heading into the Christmas break, but the head coach feels the team is coming together.

“Our goal is to try and win WECSSAA again, do well at SWOSSAA and get back to OFSAA,” said Hamelin. “They are coming together now. Our start was kind of sluggish. There is still room for improvement. When it comes down to it, we’re in the hunt to win to WECSSAA again.”

Hamelin stated the Lady Gens are competitive with the top teams in the league, including those at the AAA and AAAA level.

The Lady Gens’ next league game is Jan. 11 in LaSalle against the Sandwich Sabres. Their next home game is Jan. 18 versus Belle River.
