The General Amherst Bulldogs’ junior football season ended last Wednesday against a bigger, stronger club in the Herman Green Griffins.

Herman downed the Bulldogs 23-0 with the Griffins’ touchdowns coming through the air on eight, 15 and 14 yard touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarter respectively. Amherst conceded a safety late in the game to round out the scoring.

“They were just bigger than us,” said Amherst quarterback Sam Girard.

Girard said the defense played well but “we couldn’t get anything going offensively.”

The game was the final one in junior for Grade 10 students like Girard as they will be moving up to senior football next season. Despite being disappointed with last Wednesday afternoon’s loss, Girard said he was proud of what he and his teammates accomplished this season.

“I think we had one hell of a season,” said Girard. “I didn’t expect us to get this far.”

Amherst head coach Dave Scott said his team just ran up against a larger school, one that plays at the AAAA level as opposed to Amherst’s AA size.

“We just got beat by a better team,” said Scott. “We gave (Herman) a game they haven’t had all year. We were in it for a while.”

The size difference up front didn’t allow the Bulldogs to execute at the same level they are used to, noted Scott.

Scott was also proud of what the Bulldogs accomplished in junior football action this year.

“We had a great season,” said Scott. “We beat a lot of good teams.”
