The new accessible playground being built early next week at the Libro Centre still needs volunteers and donations.

The TVO Kids show “Giver” is filming an episode in Amherstburg for its third season with the show being similar to the “Extreme Makeover” show, but focusing on building community playgrounds.

A “meet and greet” between producers and volunteers takes place this Saturday with actual construction occurring Sunday and Monday with the grand opening being Tuesday (Aug. 19) at 2 p.m.

The playground is being built between the Miracle League diamond and the WFCU fieldhouse. Rick Daly, the town’s manager of business development and programs, noted the town has secured $50,000 in donations from when the complex was built with the “Giver” program kicking in an additional $60,000. The main expense will be the surface, which he said has specific requirements in order to meet the standards for accessible playgrounds.

A group of parents – led by Michelle Jones-Rousseau, Angela Kelly and Vanessa Amlin – have been working to try and raise an additional $10,000. Those wishing to write a cheque to assist can make it out to the Amherstburg Community Foundation.

Jones-Rousseau noted volunteers are still needed for next Monday’s build and donations are still welcome of not only money but food for the volunteers as well. Money donators will be recognized in the credits on the show when it airs later this year.

The show, produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment, also has chosen six community-minded children to participate in the filming as well. The playground construction needs at least 50 volunteers in order to complete the project.
