General Amherst starts girls soccer season in convincing fashion

It was a strong start for the General Amherst Lady Gens soccer team.

The girls opened the 2016 WECSSAA Tier 3 season with a 14-0 win over Westview Freedom Academy last Thursday afternoon at the Libro Centre. While the result of the game was never in doubt, coach Lisa Voakes said it was still a good opportunity for the players to get comfortable with each other on the pitch as well as to get comfortable with their positions.

Despite a lopsided win in their first game, the Lady Gens are anticipating things to be tougher from here on out.

“We’re expecting even matches for most of the year,” said Voakes.

Voakes said they are starting the season with a Grade 9 goalie and with other young players in other positions, but also have some talented older players on the roster as well. She expects it to be a bit of a regrouping year

“It’s really a nice group of girls,” she said, adding the team isn’t as deep as she would like it.

The Lady Gens are at home this week with a 4 p.m. game Tuesday against Kingsville and a 2 p.m. Thursday game versus Catholic Central. The following week, they have 4 p.m. home games against Kennedy and Cardinal Carter before concluding the regular season in Leamington May 3.
