General Amherst Lady Gens hockey to ‘Skate for a Cure’

Special to the RTT

The Lady Gens Hockey Team will be playing in a charity hockey game on Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the new United Communities Credit Union Complex.

The name of the event is The Corey Meloche Skate for a Cure Charity Hockey Game.  The event is named after our former captain who died tragically last year.  She was instrumental in starting the girl’s hockey program at Amherst and it is our mission to continue to remember her contributions to our school.

Our opponent for the evening was originally suppose to be Villanova but due to unforeseen circumstances they were not able to get enough players for the evening.  So we will be playing against a midget intermediate team from Harrow coached by Greg Pillon.

Greg has been involved in girl’s hockey for several years with his three daughters involved in the sport.  He also coached the Lajeunesse Girl’s high school team this year in their first season in our league.  Unfortunately in January he suffered some serious heart problems and now faces a long recovery period.  When we heard of his situation and that his friends and family were helping to raise money to help him through this very tough period in his life, we decided to help out.  So part of the proceeds of the ticket sales from the game will go to his family to help take some of the burden off of them during this rough time.  Get well soon Greg and we will see you back behind the bench next year.

Tickets for the game are $4 for adults and $2 for students.  There will also be donation jars for those who wish to donate loose change.  Proceeds go to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, The Pillon Family and a small portion to Amherst Girl’s Hockey to help pay for expenses.  There will be a “Crazy Skills Competition” between the first and second period of the game which should prove to be entertaining.  Tickets are available from any team member and will also be on sale at Amherst during lunch 11:20-11:45 a.m. this week.  We will also be at the arena selling tickets Sunday, March 27 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

We hope to see a big crowd out to support the cause.  The girl’s are very excited to be playing their first ever night game.  See you at the rink.
