The 28th annual Garden Tour was held over the weekend and garden lovers were greeted by perfect weather conditions.

Hundreds of garden lovers from around the area toured the ten private gardens and one public garden that was included as part of this year’s tour. Stops included gardens on Bastien St., Dalhousie St., Laird Ave., Atlantic Ave., Mediterranean Ave., Windermere Place and Fryer St. as well as the tourist information centre on Sandwich St. North.

Gardeners were also free to tour the local parks including King’s Navy Yard Park.

A private tour was held Saturday evening for the garden owners themselves as well as representatives of the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society, the latter being the organizers of the annual event.

Cadotte praised the work of the garden owners, whom she said have put a lot of time and effort into making their properties beautiful.

“You garden owners have done a fabulous job,” Cadotte told them at a Saturday evening reception at the Gibson Gallery, following the private tour.

Cadotte thanked them for showcasing their gardens and allowing the public into their properties for the weekend. She said the garden owners help make Amherstburg “the gemstone it is in southwestern Ontario.”

The volunteers with the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society were also honoured, as Cadotte said they tried to organize and promote the event as best they could.

“We worked very hard getting this together,” she said. “We did the best we could with our resources.”

A sample of other horticultural society initiatives include the hanging basket program, tending to beds in local parks such as King’s Navy Yard Park, the annual Trillium Awards and tending to the gardens at what is now the Amherstburg Community Services office, formerly the Amherstburg Recreation and Cultural Centre.

The society is always looking for new members, she added, and is always looking to improve themselves and the town.
