Further information has been made available with regards to the proposed new residential/commercial development planned for 238 Dalhousie St. and that information indicates that it’s business as usual for the tenants within.

While town council has been given notice of demolition to make room for the new development, owner Eowana Needham said her plans are not to redevelop the site anytime soon. She noted there are leases of the three businesses in the building, the longest being that of Riccardo’s Italian Restaurant.

Riccardo’s has two years left on their lease, she said, and Needham said nothing would happen with the building until at least next year if the restaurant was able to move into a new home by then.

“I’ve told (Riccardo’s owner Riccardo Maltese) I’d like to break ground next year and if he finds another place, I can certainly do that,” said Needham.

Needham said the process to redevelop the site is moving along and drawings would be made available at a later date. However, she said demolition of the existing “Echo Building,” former home of the now-defunct Amherstburg Echo, is at least a year away if not longer dependent upon whether Riccardo’s is able to relocate by next year.

“It’s not imminent. It’s far off,” said Needham, of the proposed demolition.

Needham added her project is something she believed will benefit the town.

“I would like to think it will help Amherstburg and certainly the downtown,” she said.
