Special to the RTT

The Friends of Fort Malden will be hosting a benefit dinner Friday, April 12 at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Amherstburg.

The theme for this event will be “Fort Amherstburg ~ From War to War.” Chatham storyteller Douglas Robinson will reprise his role of pioneer Shaymus Gunn, and share three stories from the fort’s life, taking audience members on a journey from the building of the fort in 1796 to it’s ultimate, fiery demise in September of 1813.

Along the way we’ll meet the irascible Captain Hector McLean of the Royal Canadian Volunteers, the hard-nosed officer that built the fort, and always knew what was best; we’ll follow Indian Department officer Edward Hazel in his second war, as he crosses the river with Tecumseh; and we’ll learn how a decision made in 1797 eventually led to the destruction of the fort.

Historic music will be enjoyed throughout the night, and diners will be invited to sing along with songs going back to the 1700s.  Also, for the first time, the evening will feature a surprise musical guest!

Dinner this night, prepared by the wonderful ladies of the Ladies Auxiliary, will be chicken, potatoes, veggies, salad, rolls, dessert, coffee and tea.  Tickets are $18.00, available at the Legion starting this Friday, March 28.  Advance tickets are required. Proceeds to benefit the Friends of Fort Malden and the Ladies Auxiliary.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and dinner service begins at 5:30 p.m.

Historic clothing is welcome but not required.
