Firehorse Leadership Organization gets $1,000 donation

Special to the RTT

To help celebrate 125 years of business in the community, Kent and Essex Mutual Insurance Company officials made a $1000 donation recently to Firehorse Leadership Organization.

FirehorseThe funding is in support of Firehorse’s mission of “empowering people through horsemanship and leadership development – building capacity in our future community leaders, and strengthening the character and confidence in our children, youth and families.” Partnering with Sarah Parks Horsemanship, the organization is preparing to launch its one-of-a-kind “Leadership is Horsemanship” summer camps beginning July 8th and running throughout the end of August.

Firehorse executive director Michelle Stein is excited to see the positive response from the community as registrations have been pouring in.

“Not only are the kids excited to ride and work with the horses, parents recognize the benefits of improved self esteem, self awareness, and work ethic.  All these things boost  a child’s confidence,” she says.

Bringing over ten years of experience facilitating children’s riding programs and summer camps, Sarah Parks is thrilled to host the program and provide a safe, supportive environment for the kids to enhance their leadership skills.  The 16 horses and ponies used in the program have all been hand picked for their gentle dispositions and patient demeanor.  They are the real teachers, she says.

“Horses are non-judgmental; they don’t care what brand name clothes you wear or how well you do in school.  They don’t label someone as being popular or not.  They are honest and genuine in their actions and interact with someone based on how authentic they are.  They don’t hide their emotions.  You couldn’t ask for a better role model for leadership!”

Participants are not required to have any previous horse experience as the program accommodates riders of all skill levels.
