Expansion of hours coming in the spring to McGregor Health Centre

Special to the RTT

The Harrow Health Centre Inc. has announced that there will be an expansion of business hours at the McGregor Health Centre by this spring.

The primary care satellite site of the HHC will remain open indefinitely with full secretarial support, a nurse practitioner and the strong possibility of physician involvement at the site.

According to a news release issued by the Harrow Health Centre Inc., the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) “was overwhelmed by letters and petitions in support of the satellite site. It took years of advocacy but the community’s voice has been heard.”

“The Harrow Health Centre is thrilled to be able to share this wonderful news with the community. We have remained committed to providing primary health care to the community of McGregor from the very beginning. The success of this project was a team effort,” said Merrill Baker, chair of the HHC Board of Directors. “The resounding community support of the residents of McGregor, the Town of Essex, the Town of Amherstburg and of our MPP, Taras Natyshak, are what made all the difference in keeping the site open. The community rallied together with our team at the HHC to put forth a unified, compelling message to the MOHLTC that the Harrow Health Centre needed additional funding to provide the community with a permanent McGregor clinic.”

Clinical hours in McGregor will remain the same until all planning for the expansion of hours has been completed with an official launch expected in May of 2017.

Conversations with the Town of Essex and Essex Community Services, the foot care service who shares the space with us, will begin in the next couple of weeks.  Once this has occurred, the HHC states the schedule for McGregor can be set.

In the meantime, individuals who are looking to enroll with a physician should contact the office at 519-738-2000 as soon as possible to start the enrollment process. Physicians are currently accepting patients.

The McGregor Health Centre is a primary care satellite site of the HHC. As a satellite to the Family Health Team, patients enrolled with one of the six physicians at the HHC, and who would prefer attending appointments at the McGregor location, will also have access to all the services, programs and appointments with the whole interdisciplinary team at the main Harrow site. The interdisciplinary team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, a physician assistant, the on-site lab, registered practical nurse, social worker, pharmacist, dietician and the whole administrative team.

All patients can access services and programs currently available at the Harrow location including free Tuesday evening walk-in counselling, diabetes wellness classes, smoking cessation programming, lung health programming with a registered lung therapist, childhood and adult immunization program, fluoride varnish program, minor procedures, Ontario Telemedicine Network, and the memory clinic. This list of programming is constantly evolving and the HHC is hopeful that these programs and more can be expanded into McGregor over time to best serve the community.

Currently the hours are Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

“The proposed new hours still have not been set but we will be expanding to four days per week. We are reviewing operational hours and entertaining extended hours to accommodate after school and after work appointments for the community,” said executive director Margo Reilly.
