Director of Recreation and Culture position vacant

By Joel Charron

The Town of Amherstburg is searching for a new recreation and culture director for the third time in five years.

The announcement came last Wednesday morning by CAP Pam Malott that Dennis Laporte is no longer employed by the town.

“I appreciate the leadership Dennis provided during the opening of the United Communities Credit Union Complex. Along with all recreation, parks and culture staff, Dennis was able to get this very important initiative off the ground. We wish Dennis well in his future endeavors,” Malott stated in a press release.

Laporte had been employed by the town in the position since August 2010, having come to Amherstburg with much experience from the Town of LaSalle. The position oversees the recreation, culture and parks areas of town, as well as tourism.

Malott said senior administration and council would make decisions concerning the vacancy to ensure the departmental operations continued to move forward “business as usual.”

The man taking over for Leporte until a replacement is found is Rick Daily. Daily is in a temporary contract as manager of business development and programming.

Daily is not doing the same job but is assisting staff as the department moves forward.
